Case Study 1 - Water Company

An attempted directional drilling to install a new surface water sewer beneath a block paved drive had failed, the water company wanted to be prepared for the worst case scenario, which would be an open cut excavation along the drive way. The problem being it was a private driveway and there were no existing statutory records, however it was known that a number of services including gas, electricity, water, telecom and private drainage all ran along the driveway. The drilling also included a road crossing and to prevent any damages to mains running along the street it was the water companies aim to have the road crossing and the driveway mapped for all underground utilities and anomalies. During the initial drilling attempt the drill rods had got stuck at some point, the exact position and depth weren’t clear, we were asked to try to find the end of the drill rods to assist in any future drilling and also to assist in the retrieval of the drill rods.

We initially carried out a radio frequency survey identifying all metallic and power carrying features, i.e. Street lighting cables, telecom cables, HV/LV electric cables. Following that we lifted all existing manhole covers and, using a 33 KHz Sonde attached to a glass fibre line, threaded each sewer to identify line and depth between manholes. Each located utility was marked on the ground using non-permanent spot marking paint, each utility identified by colour of paint used, i.e. red – electric, white – telecom, orange – sewers, etc.

After completion of the RF location survey we marked out a survey grid on the ground, again using non-permanent spray paint. This grid would be used to mark the locations where each radar scan would be taken. The Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) was then deployed, this element of the survey is used to confirm location and depth of utilities already found by the RF survey and to identify any other utilities such as plastic gas & water pipes, CATV ducting (without cables) and any other feature which we identify.
